The kids are currently on our deck underneath the sheet I nailed into the corner with the dollar store blow up pool. It’s hot out and we just took down the big pool we had because of its being a breading ground for parasites.
We started the day at 6:30am which seems to be the normal now. I am ok with that, but 5am starts will have to wait until they can get their own breakfast. It didn’t take them long to start hatching their escape plan. They took their chance when nature called and I was unable to leave the bathroom in a quick fashion. It became eerily quiet in the living room and after unsuccessful answers from either of them I ran out looking.
Not on the deck.
Not in the play ground.
Yard, no.
I ran down the stairs, through the mud room out the back door, all the while yelling their names. No answer. I learned on a wonderful show call Chicago Fire (haha) to say “Call out!” And told her that if she hears me she needs to just yell so I know where she is. Of course she doesn’t actually ever answer me so there’s that.
So I find her on her bike, in her pyjamas in the drive way barefoot of course. Parker is no where to be found. I ask where her brother is. Her reply;
I saw him 15min ago running through the trees.
She’s pointing to the south of our property. I get her in the house and tell her she has to go to her room (reality I am yelling all of this, I only have an outdoor voice remember). I run back outside and get on the quad (again SO thankful we live in the country). She’s in her window talking, no clue what she’s saying. I drive around yelling for Parker, I am legitimately starting to panic.
Our house and the house next door shared a septic pond. PJ put in a septic field last year for our house. But my biggest fear is they will somehow get over the fence and into the water.
Parker likes to go next door, so I head behind the house (again SO thankful we live in the country and own a quad, there’s no way I could cover that much ground). He was in the back woods, behind their house. For such a little guy that doesnt bend his knees when he runs, he’s exceptionally fast. He’s like a little animal that’s startled, sees and hears me coming and takes off running, again no way I could have caught him on foot. He’s carrying a double a battery. I’m covering my eyes shaking my head currently, just so you know how I feel as well.
Now, as you are aware this is not the first escape. There is three locks on the deck door plus the lock on the gate. She pushes the chair over unlocks the top, the handle, the bottom walks out undoes the deck lock and they are free. They don’t even stay together! They take off in opposite directions, fyi the directions she gave me as to where Parker had gone, were wrong. Also the door handle safety covers, that are supposed to be child proof, she knows how to take them off. She figures this all out on her own, we don’t help her.
So when I hear about a child that has taken off without their parents knowing, I feel for them, deeply. Because in the city, this story would have been a completely different telling. The ending might have been different, we would have been ridiculed on social media for being terrible parents. We would have been destroyed, because it wouldn’t have been enough for us to suffer the potential happenings to our children, but the world wouldn’t have been finished until we were completely broken and lost.
Remember that the next time you hear of a child running out of the house. You never know the circumstance of the situation. Actually remember that before you decide to leave the all to familiar “where were the parents…” comment on a story you read. Because I was 5feet away with the bathroom door open and they were able to escape without a trace.
If you have any fail safe options for REAL childproof locks PLEASE let me know. Ive already changed the gate lock. Enjoy the day!
Spread the love
